Will Paramount+ be launched in Japan through partnerships with J:COM and Wowow?

Paramount+ is expanding its reach in Asia as it announces its launch in Japan through partnerships with J:COM and Wowow. The popular streaming service will be available as a free addition to J:COM’s cable and internet platform, as well as to Wowow’s pay-TV service.

The launch in Japan marks the second country in East Asia where Paramount+ becomes available, following its successful debut in South Korea in June last year. In South Korea, Paramount+ operates as a free tier on the local streaming platform TVing, thanks to the strategic partnership between Paramount and leading Korean entertainment group CJ ENM. Paramount+ also operates through partnerships with SKY in Italy, the U.K., and Germany, as well as with Canal+ in France.

Japanese viewers can look forward to enjoying Paramount+ originals such as “Tulsa King,” “Mayor of Kingstown,” and “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” when the service launches. This will be the first time these highly anticipated shows are available in Japan.

Paramount expressed excitement about the partnership with J:COM and Wowow, emphasizing the milestone it represents for the streaming business. Marco Nobili, Executive VP and International GM of Paramount+ International, said, “I am excited to strengthen our collaboration with J:COM and Wowow to offer their audiences incredible content and beloved stars and characters from our iconic studios and brands.”

Both J:COM and Wowow have previously enjoyed a successful relationship with Paramount through the delivery of MTV music channel and a variety of movies and dramas. Iwaki Yoichi, President and Representative Director of J:COM, stated, “We are pleased to bring Paramount’s diverse content to the people of Japan through this new partnership,” adding that Paramount+ original productions like “NCIS” and “CSI” are highly acclaimed by their customers.

Similarly, Tanaka Akira, Representative Director, President, and CEO of Wowow, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting their satisfaction with the Hollywood films and drama series they have received from Paramount Global over the past 20 years. With the new collaboration, Wowow will now offer a large volume of wonderful content from Paramount+, including films and international dramas, through its on-demand service.

The launch of Paramount+ in Japan through partnerships with J:COM and Wowow is a significant move for the streaming service, allowing Japanese audiences to access a wide range of compelling content featuring beloved stars and characters. Paramount+ continues to expand its global footprint, bringing its popular films and series to audiences worldwide.
