Did Taylor Swift’s call for fans to register to vote drive a surge in traffic to the registration site?

Taylor Swift’s Call for Fans to Register to Vote Helped Drive Surge in Traffic to Registration Site

It seems that Taylor Swift has the magic touch when it comes to getting people to register to vote. On National Voter Registration Day, the nonpartisan nonprofit Vote.org saw a massive spike in voter registration thanks to the Grammy-winning singer.

According to Vote.org, a whopping 157,041 eligible voters visited the site on Tuesday, with 35,252 new registrations. This surge in traffic came after Taylor Swift took to her Instagram Stories, which boasts 272 million followers, to encourage her fans to register to vote using Vote.org.

In her Instagram Stories post, Taylor Swift wrote, “Are you registered to vote yet? I’ve been so lucky to see so many of you guys at my US shows recently. I’ve heard you raise your voices, and I know how powerful they are. Make sure you’re ready to use them in our elections this year! Register to vote in less than 2 minutes at vote.org/NVRD.”

The impact of Taylor Swift’s outreach was significant. Vote.org not only experienced record-breaking traffic to its site, making it the largest National Voter Registration Day since 2020, but also saw notable increases in registrations among 18-year-olds. Compared to 2019, there was a 72 percent increase, and compared to 2022, there was an astonishing 115 percent increase.

Andrea Hailey, CEO of Vote.org, praised the young generation for consistently showing up and expressing their commitment to their rights and access to the ballot box. She stated, “During the day on Tuesday, we saw a 1226% jump in participation the hour after Taylor Swift posted. Our site was averaging 13,000 users every 30 minutes – a number that Taylor Swift would be proud of.”

This isn’t the first time Taylor Swift has used her platform to encourage voter registration. In 2018, she posted on her social media, urging her followers to register and even endorsing two Democratic candidates. Vote.org also experienced a surge in registrations back then, proving Taylor Swift’s influence on her Swifties.

It’s inspiring to see celebrities like Taylor Swift using their fame to encourage civic engagement and empower young people to exercise their right to vote. With her massive following and influence, she continues to make a meaningful impact on encouraging political participation.
