Does Warner Bros Discovery partner with Taiwan Mobile and TAICCA to export Taiwanese content?

Warner Bros Discovery, in a multi-year partnership, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Taiwan Mobile and Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) to collaborate and distribute Taiwanese original content locally and globally.

While specific projects have yet to be announced, Warner Bros Discovery has a successful track record of producing both scripted and unscripted Taiwanese shows over the past five years. Some of the notable productions include “The Teenage Psychic,” “Dream Raider,” “Trinity Of Shadows,” “The World Between Us,” “Adventure Of The Ring,” and “Who’s By Your Side.” These shows are currently available on HBO Go, the regional streaming service catering to Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

Taiwan Mobile, the second-largest telecom company in Taiwan, has shown interest in the creative industry by investing in more than 40 productions including “Tears On Fire,” “Magician On The Skywalk,” and “The Victims’ Game.” The company previously collaborated with Warner Bros Discovery on the HBO Asia co-production “Workers,” which received nine nominations and four awards at Taiwan’s Golden Bell Awards in 2021.

Supported by Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture, TAICCA is a public agency dedicated to developing, supporting, and promoting Taiwan’s creative industries. In the upcoming Taiwan Creative Content Fest (TCCF) scheduled for November 7-12 in Taipei, TAICCA will showcase the best of Taiwanese creative content.

Recognizing the significance of the creative industries, Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture has been actively working on amendments to the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Act. These amendments aim to provide financial incentives to foster growth and investment in the local creative sector.

In a joint statement, the three partners expressed their shared vision: “The MOU combines the expertise and reach of the three companies to develop, produce, and distribute local IP and content for both local and global audiences.” The MOU was signed by Daphne Lee, Taiwan Mobile’s Vice President of New Media Business; Cindy Ma, Head of Commercial Taiwan, Warner Bros Discovery; Taiwan’s Minister of Culture, Shih Che; and TAICCA Chairperson, Homme Tsai.
