Is ‘They Follow’ sequel with Maika Monroe launching at AFM?

NEON is set to launch sales this week at the American Film Market (AFM) for the highly anticipated sequel to “It Follows,” titled “They Follow.” The film will see the return of filmmaker David Robert Mitchell as both director and writer, with Maika Monroe reprising her role as Jay Height.

Production for “They Follow” is expected to begin in 2024.

NEON will co-produce the film alongside Good Fear Content. David Robert Mitchell will serve as a producer, alongside Jake Weiner and Chris Bender of Good Fear Content, as well as the original producers of “It Follows,” David Kaplan, Erik Rommesmo, Rebecca Green, and Laura Smith.

NEON CEO originally handled the distribution of “It Follows” at RADiUS, which gained a cult following and grossed $15 million in the US box office.

David Robert Mitchell first gained recognition in the film industry with his coming-of-age drama “The Myth of the American Sleepover” in 2010, which premiered at the South by Southwest festival. “It Follows,” his second film, received critical acclaim and even earned a Critics Choice Awards nomination for Best Sci-Fi/Horror Movie. In 2018, Mitchell wrote, produced, and directed the black comedy/mystery “Under the Silver Lake,” starring Andrew Garfield and Riley Keough. Currently, he is also working on an untitled project with Anne Hathaway for Warner Bros. and Bad Robot.

Maika Monroe, known for her breakout role in “It Follows,” recently wrapped production on the film “Longlegs,” directed by Oz Perkins and co-starring Nicolas Cage. “Longlegs” is set to be released by NEON in 2024. Monroe has also appeared in Neil Jordan’s “Greta” for Focus Features, as well as “Hot Summer Nights,” “Villains,” “Honey Boy,” and “Watcher.” She is represented by WME and Entertainment360.

In August, NEON expanded its international presence with the launch of an international sales division. The division is currently handling foreign sales for Ava DuVernay’s film “Origin,” which will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, with NEON set to release the film on December 8th.

Upcoming projects for NEON include Pamela Adlon’s directorial debut “Babes,” Michael Mann’s “Ferrari,” Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or winner “Anatomy of a Fall,” Alice Rohrwacher’s “La Chimera,” Wim Wenders’ “Perfect Days,” and Pablo Berger’s “Robot Dreams.”

The deal for “They Follow” was brokered by CAA Media Finance on behalf of NEON.

David Robert Mitchell is represented by CAA, Good Fear Content, and David Fox at Myman Greenspan Fineman Fox Rosenberg & Light. Maika Monroe is represented by WME and Entertainment360. The producers are represented by Hayden Godlblatt of FKKS, Allison Binder of GGSSC, and Michael Weiss of Concentric Law.
