“Did Scott Derrickson leave Doctor Strange 2?

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had a famously troubled production. During a recent interview, Scott Derrickson revealed why he left the infamous Marvel Studios sequel.

While Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange was far from the most well-received Marvel Studios project at the time of its release, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme has grown on fans as a beloved Marvel Cinematic Universe hero. When the time came for a sequel, Derrickson left the project due to “creative disputes,” leading to In The Multiverse of Madness. According to Derrickson, if he had stayed on, the movie could have been even worse.

“All I can say is that what we said publicly is exactly the truth,” Derrickson tells The Playlist. “We had real creative differences. You know, the movie I wanted to make and how I wanted to make it was different than–it was just increasingly obvious that we were pulling against each other. And that’s how you make a really bad movie, I think. When the producer or the studio and the filmmaker are making different movies, you end up with a monstrosity and, you know, that’s why I had to bounce.”

It’s certainly understandable why Scott Derrickson would leave the Doctor Strange sequel if he didn’t agree with Marvel Studios’ direction. However, due to unforeseen circumstances like the pandemic, In The Multiverse of Madness ended up being a bigger mess than many could have predicted. Hopefully, whoever helms Doctor Strange 3 has better luck with the MCU’s unluckiest trilogy.

The Future of Doctor Strange

Directed by Sam Raimi from a script written by Michael Waldron, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Rachel McAdams.

The official synopsis for the Doctor Strange sequel reads as follows: “The MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now available to own on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD. It’s also streaming exclusively on Disney Plus.
