Will ‘Gannibal’ Disney+ Japanese Horror Series Return for a Second Season?

Disney+ has announced that the Japanese drama-horror series “Gannibal” will be returning for a second season. The show, set in a fictional Japanese village, follows police officer Agawa Daigo as he uncovers the dark secrets of the villagers and the mysterious Goto family.

The first season of “Gannibal” introduced us to Agawa Daigo, a police officer who moves to the village after a traumatic event that affected his daughter. As he settles into his new home, he realizes that something is deeply wrong with the villagers and the Goto family. The series delves into Agawa’s struggle with guilt and his determination to uncover the truth.

The second season will see the return of Yagira Yuya in the lead role of Agawa Daigo, along with Kasamatsu Sho as Goto Keisuke and Yoshioka Riho as Agawa’s wife. Yagira’s performance in the role has even earned him a nomination for Best Actor at the Busan International Film Festival’s Asia Contents Awards & Global OTT Awards.

The creative team behind the show will also continue their collaboration in the second season, with screenwriter and Academy Award-nominee Oe Takamasa, director Katayama Shinzo, and producer Yamamoto Teruhisa returning to bring the story to life.

Since its premiere on Disney+ in December 2022, “Gannibal” has become the most-watched locally produced original series in Japan (based on hours streamed). The show has captured audiences with its suspenseful storyline and captivating performances. It has also been made available on Hulu.

In a statement, Disney expressed excitement for the upcoming season, promising that audiences will uncover more of the village’s horrifying secrets and witness Agawa’s journey to bring the Goto family to justice. Season one left viewers on a heart-stopping cliffhanger, and the second season aims to continue the emotional rollercoaster.

Although an exact release date has not been revealed, a teaser video for the second season hints that it will be dropping in 2024. Fans of “Gannibal” will have to wait a little longer to embark on another thrilling adventure in the twisted world of the Japanese village.
