In an exciting move, A24 has recently acquired the theatrical distribution rights for the Colman Domingo-starring drama, “Sing Sing.” The film made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival just five days before the deal was confirmed by the indie banner.
Directed by Greg Kwedar, “Sing Sing” draws inspiration from the Rehabilitation Through the Arts program at the Sing Sing Correctional Facility in New York. The story follows a group of inmates who collaborate on stage shows. Alongside Domingo, who also starred in the George C. Wolfe-directed biopic “Rustin” from Netflix, the cast includes Paul Raci, known for his Academy Award-nominated supporting role in “Sound of Metal,” as well as Clarence Maclin and Sean San José.
The film was financed and produced by Black Bear, the Marfa Peach Company, and Edith Productions. Kwedar and Clint Bentley collaborated to adapt the script from Brent Buell’s play, “Breakin’ the Mummy’s Code,” and John H. Richardson’s “The Sing Sing Follies.” Monique Walton, Clint Bentley, and Kwedar serve as producers, while the executive producer credits feature several principal actors in the film, including Domingo, Maclin, Raúl Domingo, Michael Heimler, Teddy Schwarzman, Larry Kalas, Larry Kelly, Nancy Schafer, and John “Divine G” Whitfield.
CAA Media Finance handled the North American distribution deal, while Black Bear continues to search for buyers for international territories.
“Sing Sing” has already received positive reviews, with Variety’s critic Stephen Saito praising the film for its deeply empathetic and engaging portrayal of the carceral system. Saito also highlighted Domingo’s commanding performance, noting his ability to share the spotlight with his nonprofessional co-stars.
