Viggo Mortensen’s sneaky sword makes surprise cameo in latest film!

  • Viggo Mortensen used his own sword from the Lord of the Rings series in his latest film, The Dead Don’t Hurt
  • He had to ask permission from Peter Jackson and the movie company to use the sword as it wasn’t essential to the scene
  • Mortensen expressed interest in returning to the franchise for the upcoming film, The Hunt for Gollum

Have you ever wondered what you would do if you needed a sword for a movie and just happened to have one lying around from one of the most famous fantasy films of all time? Well, that’s exactly the dilemma Viggo Mortensen found himself in while filming his latest movie, The Dead Don’t Hurt.

In this Western film, Mortensen needed a sword for a fantasy sequence, and instead of using just any sword, he decided to bring out Andúril, Aragorn’s sword from the iconic Lord of the Rings trilogy. But before he could use it, he had to get permission.

Mortensen recounted in an interview with GQ Magazine how he had everything set up for the scene with a knight – the horse, the saddle, the costume – but realized they needed a sword. So, he decided to ask Peter Jackson, the director of Lord of the Rings, for permission to use the sword.

Fortunately, both Jackson and the movie company were okay with it, understanding that the sword wasn’t essential to the scene but would be a nice nod to fans of the franchise. And just like that, Andúril made its way into The Dead Don’t Hurt, even if just for a brief moment.

Now, you might be thinking, “Wait, Viggo Mortensen has a new movie out?” Yes, indeed! The Dead Don’t Hurt is now playing in select theaters, and Mortensen even expressed interest in returning to the Lord of the Rings franchise for the upcoming The Hunt for Gollum, if the opportunity arises.

“I like playing that character,” Mortensen said. “I learned a lot playing the character. I enjoyed it a lot. I would only do it if I was right for it in terms of, you know, the age I am now and so forth. It would be silly to do it otherwise.”

So, if you’re a fan of Viggo Mortensen, Lord of the Rings, or just good ol’ fashioned movie trivia, be sure to check out The Dead Don’t Hurt. And who knows, maybe we’ll see Aragorn back in action once again in the future.
