After two seasons, the reboot of “The Wonder Years” has been canceled by ABC, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The decision to end the comedy series comes after its 10-episode second season aired its finale on August 16. Originally slated for the fall, ABC had pushed the season to the summer.
“The Wonder Years” drew inspiration from the original series of the same name, which ended in May 1993 after six seasons. The recent version starred Dulé Hill and had Don Cheadle as the narrator. The cast also included Elisha “EJ” Williams, Saycon Sengbloh, Laura Kariuki, Amari O’Neil, Julian Lerner, and Milan Ray. The series was created by Saladin K. Patterson and premiered in September 2021.
However, the reboot faced some controversy when Fred Savage, the star of the original series, who was involved as a director and executive producer on ABC’s version, was fired last year following a misconduct investigation.
ABC’s fall lineup is set to launch later this month, but it will not include any new scripted shows due to ongoing writers and actors strikes. Instead, the network will heavily rely on unscripted offerings. Some of the shows returning soon are “Dancing With the Stars,” which is coming back to ABC after its previous season on Disney+, as well as game shows like “Celebrity Jeopardy!,” “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune,” and “Press Your Luck.” The “Bachelor” franchise spinoffs “Bachelor in Paradise” and “The Golden Bachelor,” which focuses on senior citizens, will also be airing new episodes.
