Cobra Kai creators spill on casting 80s legend C. Thomas Howell like it’s totally rad!

The Cobra Kai creators are at it again, this time with their latest Netflix show, Obliterated. And guess what? They’ve only gone and cast 80s legend C. Thomas Howell in what they describe as his best role in years. The man is back and better than ever!

I had the pleasure of sitting down with the genius brains behind Cobra Kai, Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, to talk about their new show, Obliterated. The series follows a group of very intoxicated Navy SEALs as they attempt to take down a terrorist cell in Vegas, all while balancing intense action with comedy. The cast, including Nick Zano and Shelley Hennig, is absolutely top-notch. But the real scene-stealer is none other than C. Thomas Howell, who plays the group’s slightly unhinged bomb expert.

In the show, Howell’s character, Haggerty, swoops in and saves the day in the opening action sequence, only to celebrate by getting “Obliterated” (hence the title). While the rest of the team mostly sticks to alcohol (and some mild drugs), Haggerty goes all out with anything he can get his hands on, ending up comatose for several episodes. He’s carried around like a ragdoll by the rest of the cast, giving off some serious Weekend at Bernie’s vibes. And let me tell you, Hurwitz, Schlossberg, and Heald were over the moon when Howell showed up to audition.

If you watch the clip, you’ll see that these guys were fully aware of Howell’s 80s fame from iconic movies like The Outsiders, Secret Admirer, and yes, the somewhat controversial Soul Man. Howell is the show’s William Zabka, proving that these 80s stars are more than ready for a major comeback when given the opportunity. And if Obliterated takes off (which, let’s be real, it absolutely should), we hope to see Howell getting even more chances to shine. Oh, and a little heads up for those of you who have already binged the show – Howell does a full frontal scene, and the creators thought he’d be a bit shy about it, so they made him a prosthetic. But guess what? He refused to wear it, so what you see is all Howell. #Legend

Obliterated is now available for streaming on Netflix, so make sure to check it out and see Howell in all his unapologetic glory. And don’t forget to read our review too! This show is the perfect mix of action, comedy, and 80s nostalgia, and we are here for every moment of it.
