The Marvels, the next installment of Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), is facing a potentially lackluster opening weekend at the box office, according to long-range tracking data.
The latest tracking data from Box Office Pro indicates that The Marvels is currently projected to have a domestic opening weekend between $50 million and $75 million. While this may seem like a significant amount, it falls considerably below the typical opening weekend earnings of Marvel movies. Comparing pre-sale trends, The Marvels is currently tracking 42% behind Eternals, 69% behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and a whopping 72% behind Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The report also suggests that the domestic box office performance could range from $121 million to $189 million, which is considerably low for a Marvel film.
To put this into perspective, the first Captain Marvel film opened domestically with an impressive $154 million ($456 million worldwide) and went on to gross over $1.1 billion. However, it is important to note that the landscape has changed since then, and Marvel movies and TV shows have received more mixed reviews in recent years. Critics have pointed out a lack of focus and direction in some of the recent releases, which may have affected audience anticipation for The Marvels.
It is worth mentioning that these tracking numbers could still change as we are still a month away from the movie’s release. However, the current projections do not bode well for The Marvels, suggesting that it may not enjoy the same level of success as its predecessor. Moreover, the movie faces significant competition in November, with several other highly anticipated films releasing in close proximity, including The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Trolls Band Together, Next Goal Wins, Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving, Wish, Napoleon, and Maestro.

Alongside Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, The Marvels also stars Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, Zawe Ashton as Dar-Benn, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. The Marvels is set to hit theaters on November 10th.</p
