The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was unexpectedly taken off the air last night and will continue to be postponed for the rest of the week. This decision comes after Colbert contracted Covid earlier this week, leading to concerns about his health and well-being.
Initially, Colbert attempted to continue hosting the show from home, much like he did during the pandemic. However, due to his worsening condition, the CBS show was ultimately pulled for the night, and now, for the rest of the week as well.
Colbert himself shared the news of his extended absence, stating, “Sorry to say, per doctor’s orders, I’m going to be out for the rest of the week. Resting up so that I can deliver the handcrafted, artisanal talk show that we so enjoy serving you. In the meantime, a heady blend of Paxlovid and onions in my socks (thank you, Fallon) will be rebuilding my immune system.”
This unforeseen change in scheduling has affected guests scheduled to appear on the show, including Rachel Maddow and Keegan-Michael Key. However, to provide viewers with some entertainment, a performance by rising indie rocker Caroline Polachek was made available on The Late Show’s official YouTube channel.
Colbert had initially hinted at his illness earlier in the week, describing himself as feeling sweaty with a flaming throat. Unfortunately, Covid has once again disrupted Colbert’s plans, as it recently did with the cancellation of Strike Force 3 – a live show featuring Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, and Jimmy Kimmel that was supposed to take place in Las Vegas last month but was canceled after Kimmel contracted the virus.
This is not the first time Colbert has faced difficulties due to Covid. He had to temporarily halt production of The Late Show last year after testing positive in April, with a recurrence of the virus in May.
